52 Clinic Modality Observations

During a student’s first two semesters in the program, they will rotate through seven or eight special modalities to observe for a half day.  These areas are Computed Tomography (CT), Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), Vascular Interventional (VI), Cardiac Interventional/Cardiac Vascular (CI/CV), Ultrasound (US), Mammography (females), Nuclear Medicine (NM), and Radiation Therapy (RTh).

There is a short assignment to do for each modality.  Before going to the modality the student will do the following:  Before each of the modality rotation: (1) watch a 4-5 minute (minimum) video about the specialty area, (2) record the web site viewed, interview a technologist in that modality, and (3) record the chapter from Bontrager’s Positioning Textbook where someone could refer to for more information about the modality.  After each of the rotations: (1) record a personal description of patient involvement.  (2) List five things that are specific/unique to the modality and/or exams.  Mammography for Males: complete these last two tasks based on the information you read from Bontrager’s or learn from the video.  This can be completed in either semester.

Collecting all of this information will then be helpful as each student must select two modalities where they will do a one week rotation in the selected modality in their second year of the program.  All students will do a two week rotation in CT.  These observations will give the student a better appreciation of medical imaging as a whole.  It will also help guide future careers as students may choose to continue on to the B.S. Medical Imaging Technology (MIT) Program.

This assignment is part of the Clinical Course Requirement Checklist grade for 2.5% of the final course grade.
