32 Lead Marker Policy

Each student will need to purchase a right (R) and left (L) marker set at the start of the program. The typical marker size is approximately 1” wide and 1 ¾” high.  These markers can be purchased from a variety of online companies; however, students must purchase the traditional blue and red markers. Customized markers are not allowed in clinic or lab.

It is suggested that students purchase a backup set of plain markers in the event they lose a marker.  Students are expected to have their markers accessible at all times while in the clinical setting.  Students are responsible for marking all images while working in clinic.  Students are responsible for the replacement costs of markers.  A student who loses one or both markers should inform their clinical preceptor and/or the clinical coordinator as soon as possible.  The typical cost of one set is about $10 but can vary from place to place and there may be a minimum dollar purchase with some companies.

Non-compliance Examples Include, But Are Not Limited To: 

• working in clinic with one marker
• working in clinic with temporary/disposable markers
• working in clinic with no markers
• sharing markers with another student or technologist
• annotating images due to lost markers
• using personalized markers in facilities that do not allow them
• using customized markers outside of the standard blue and red markers

Students not marking images with a lead marker will not be allowed to obtain competency exams and will be sent home incurring a personal day.  Should an image be discovered that a student counted as a competency exam without student markers present can expect to have the competency deleted from the database as well as their competency count.  In addition, the student may be charged with falsifying documentation. Sharing of markers is not allowed.
