39 Funeral Leave Policy
A student is granted up to three clinic funeral days for the death of a parent, sibling, spouse, child, or equivalent in law. A student is granted two clinic funeral days for the death of an aunt, uncle, grandparent or equivalent in law. These absences are excused and NOT counted as personal days. Request for additional funeral leave can be made based on extenuating circumstances. This additional time off will require the student to use their personal days or may require that the student take an incomplete in the clinical course.
The student must contact their clinical preceptor by phone or email to request funeral leave. The absence must be prescheduled or reported to the clinical preceptor before the specified time for that clinical assignment. Funeral leave will not be granted without pre-scheduling.
Funeral leave does not count against personal time. When requesting funeral leave, the student must give the name of the deceased, the relationship to the student, and the date and location of the funeral. Documentation of attendance at the funeral is required (usually a showing or prayer card). Documentation must be sent electronically to the clinical preceptor or clinical coordinator within one week of the funeral leave. Funeral leave taken on clinic days must be documented in Evalue under the “other” task category with “funeral leave” in the notes section.
