Active reading: Affective response

<5 minutes prep

Provide guidance for students to thoughtfully read and prepare responses for class discussion.

  1. Prep: In Canvas, click Assignments from the left navigation, then +Assignment.
  2. Title the assignment [a] then add the reading assignment and the following questions in the assignment guidance text box below [b]:
    • HOW did this piece affect you?
    • WHY did the piece affect you this way?
    • What is the most important [word, words, idea, paragraph] in this piece? Why do you think so?

  1. Grade the assignment before class to identify trends to discuss after the activity.
  2. In-person: Form groups of 3-5 students.
  3. Ask students to access their Canvas Assignment.
  4. Have groups discuss their assignment then report out to the class.

Discuss trends you notice and how students’ opinions changed upon hearing others’ insights.
